90% of our staff hold this position. As a Wico camp counselor you have a dual role: You live in a cabin with 6-12 campers and teach/coach in your activity area of expertise. Counselors are responsible for creating communities that are both fun and emotionally and physically safe. Counselors are role models, teachers, listeners, guides, mediators, coaches, cheerleaders, players, lesson-planners and confidantes. The responsibilities of a counselor can be compared to the job of a "working" parent. *If you are interested in living with and supervising our youngest campers please see Camp Mom You will be working with two distinct supervisors, the Head Counselor, who oversees all aspects of a particular age group, and the Activity Head who oversees the activity area in which a staff member is teaching. Cabin Life - Supervision of a camper bunk (six to twelve girls, depending upon age) in conjunction with one or two other co-counselors on a daily basis, particularly during morning cleanup/inspection after breakfast, three meals, rest hour, evening activity, and evening preparation for bed. Counselors are responsible for creating a fun and safe bunk experience for each camper.
Teaching and Coaching - Planning and supervising instruction in the six activity periods (two in the morning, and four in the afternoon) in the areas of a counselor's expertise. Many activity periods will be taught by more than one staff member, and cooperative planning and instruction occurs frequently.
CAMP MOM As a Camp Mom you live and work with our youngest campers (ages 6-9). You chaperone your campers to and from activities and participate in those activities. Camp Moms are patient, nurturing, and responsible. They are guides, caregivers, fun-lovers, mediators, and hand-holders. If you love the 1st-3rd graders, this job is for you. Camp Moms are supervised by a Head Counselor. back to top HEAD COUNSELOR (HC) Directly supervises Camp Counselors in cabin life. As a Head Counselor you are part of Wico's leadership team. You are responsible for two age groups (25-75 total campers) and their counselors (10-30 young adults). HCs are trainers, supervisors, motivators, self-starters, mediators, listeners, and collaborators. Additional responsibilities include: on-going staff training, parent communication, running community meetings and having in-depth knowledge of your campers and staff. You set the tone! back to top ACTIVITY HEAD (AH) Directly supervises Camp Counselors teaching and coaching. As an Activity Head you are responsible for all aspects of your program area from supervising staff and designing your curriculum to area maintenance and staff scheduling. AHs have a high level of expertise in their area including experience supervising, teaching, and coaching children ages 6-15 & staff. AHs are self-starters, flexible, organized and creative. They are leaders of their areas and of camp. Other Responsibilities (Evening Activities, Special Events, Trips, Periodic Duty, OD, etc.): Counselors are expected to help with planning, leading and supervising periodic evening activities, special events, and trip days with their bunk or a specific age group. If you are not leading the activity, your participation and enthusiasm are critical. Counselors will have responsibilities in specific areas on a rotating basis. These are assigned with the goal of balancing the staff workload, taking advantage of specific skills and expertise, as well as providing time off for each staff member. In the evenings counselors will be On Duty (OD) on a rotating basis. This means that you are responsible for campers in your bunk (could be assigned to a different bunk) from the time your co-counselors leave, after settling campers, for the rest of the night. You are on duty until the counselors return to their bunk after checking in at the office. back to top PROGRAM TEAM As part of our Program Team you organize and maintain all aspects of our camp program from scheduling daily activities and trips to planning and running evening activities and events. Program Team members are organized, creative, and enthusiastic self-starters! back to top Kitchen Staff Our kitchen team is a crucial part of the Wicosuta family, providing essential services for everyone in our community. The kitchen and dining area is one of the busiest and happiest places at camp, serving three meals a day to over 400 people. Working in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and on the shores of Newfound Lake afford all staff members a terrific natural setting while the camp facilities offer a number activities for staff members to use during their time off from the kitchen. As a member of the kitchen team, you will be trained to share duties in three distinct areas: Kitchen Prep, Dishwashing, and Dining Hall services. OFFICE STAFF The camp office is the center for all areas of camp. Office staff members interact with the camp community and keep all types of information flowing smoothly each and every day.
