Welcome to Wico
CAMP COUNSELOR
90% of our staff hold this position. As a Wico camp counselor you have a dual role: You live in a cabin with 6-12 campers and teach/coach in your activity area of expertise. Counselors are responsible for creating communities that are both fun and emotionally and physically safe. Counselors are role models, teachers, listeners, guides, mediators, coaches, cheerleaders, players, lesson-planners and confidantes. The responsibilities of a counselor can be compared to the job of a "working" parent.

You will be working with two distinct supervisors, the Head Counselor, who oversees all aspects of a particular age group, and the Activity Head who oversees the activity area in which a staff member is teaching.

Cabin Life - Supervision of a camper bunk (six to twelve girls, depending upon age) in conjunction with one or two other co-counselors on a daily basis, particularly during morning cleanup/inspection after breakfast, three meals, rest hour, evening activity, and evening preparation for bed. Counselors are responsible for creating a fun and safe bunk experience for each camper.

Lower Camp Age Groups
Oski: 7-8 year olds (1st & 2nd grade)
Casco: 9 year olds (3rd grade)
Coo: 10 year olds (4th grade)
Eagle: 11year olds (5th grade)
Upper Camp Age Groups
Kineo: 12 year olds (6th grade)
Agawan: 13 year olds (7th grade)
Zuni: 14 year olds (8th grade)
Totem: 15 year olds (9th grade)

Teaching and Coaching - Planning and supervising instruction in the six activity periods (two in the morning, and four in the afternoon) in the areas of a counselor's expertise. Many activity periods will be taught by more than one staff member, and cooperative planning and instruction occurs frequently.

CAMP MOM
As a Camp Mom you live and work with our youngest campers (ages 6-9). You chaperone your campers to and from activities and participate in those activities. Camp Moms are patient, nurturing, and responsible. They are guides, caregivers, fun-lovers, mediators, and hand-holders. If you love the 1st-3rd graders, this job is for you. Camp Moms are supervised by a Head Counselor.

HEAD COUNSELOR (HC)
Directly supervises Camp Counselors in cabin life.
As a Head Counselor you are part of Wico's leadership team. You are responsible for two age groups (25-75 total campers) and their counselors (10-30 young adults). HCs are trainers, supervisors, motivators, self-starters, mediators, listeners, and collaborators. Additional responsibilities include: on-going staff training, parent communication, running community meetings and having in-depth knowledge of your campers and staff. You set the tone!

ACTIVITY HEAD (AH)
Directly supervises Camp Counselors teaching and coaching.
As an Activity Head you are responsible for all aspects of your program area from supervising staff and designing your curriculum to area maintenance and staff scheduling. AHs have a high level of expertise in their area including experience supervising, teaching, and coaching children ages 6-15 & staff. AHs are self-starters, flexible, organized and creative. They are leaders of their areas and of camp.

Other Responsibilities (Evening Activities, Special Events, Trips, Periodic Duty, OD, etc.):
Counselors are expected to help with planning, leading and supervising periodic evening activities, special events, and trip days with their bunk or a specific age group. If you are not leading the activity, your participation and enthusiasm are critical. Counselors will have responsibilities in specific areas on a rotating basis. These are assigned with the goal of balancing the staff workload, taking advantage of specific skills and expertise, as well as providing time off for each staff member. In the evenings counselors will be On Duty (OD) on a rotating basis. This means that you are responsible for campers in your bunk (could be assigned to a different bunk) from the time your co-counselors leave, after settling campers, for the rest of the night. You are on duty until the counselors return to their bunk after checking in at the office.

PROGRAM TEAM
As part of our Program Team you organize and maintain all aspects of our camp program from scheduling daily activities and trips to planning and running evening activities and events. Program Team members are organized, creative, and enthusiastic self-starters!

Kitchen Staff
Our kitchen team is a crucial part of the Wicosuta family, providing essential services for everyone in our community. The kitchen and dining area is one of the busiest and happiest places at camp, serving three meals a day to over 400 people. Working in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and on the shores of Newfound Lake afford all staff members a terrific natural setting while the camp facilities offer a number activities for staff members to use during their time off from the kitchen.

As a member of the kitchen team, you will be trained to share duties in three distinct areas: Kitchen Prep, Dishwashing, and Dining Hall services.

Kitchen and Dining Hall job tasks vary daily and include, but are not limited to:
  • Assisting the Head and Assistant chefs in meal preparation.
  • Set up for all camp meals.
  • Service of camp meals.
  • Cleaning of kitchen and dining hall.
  • Assisting with the service of food during occasional camp evening activities.
  • Adding to general dining enjoyment.

CLEANING/LAUNDRY STAFF
Our cleaning/laundry staff are an integral part of camp life and are respected and appreciated by everyone in the camp community. We look for team members who are industrious, hard working, and persistent.

Job tasks include, but are not limited to:
  • Cleaning bathrooms throughout the camp, including toilets, showers, sinks and floors.
  • Vacuuming and tidying office areas.
  • Sweeping common porch areas.
  • General tidiness and beautification of camp facilities.
  • Working with our nurses to keep all aspects of our health care facility clean.
  • Laundry as needed.

OFFICE STAFF
The camp office is the center for all areas of camp. Office staff members interact with the camp community and keep all types of information flowing smoothly each and every day. Office staff members are professional, patient, polite, and industrious.

The office is staffed from 7:30 am to 9:00pm daily. The tasks our secretaries perform include:
  • Answering the phone. The office is the first point of contact for all incoming phone calls from parents, visitors, and suppliers.
  • Daily administrative support for camp directors, head counselors, and senior staff members including data entry, copies, mailings, etc.
  • Camp wide announcements.
  • Sorting and distribution of all campers and staff email, mail, and packages.
  • Other office and camp tasks as required

NURSING STAFF
Camp nurses are responsible for the health, safety and TLC of our campers and staff.

Camp Nurse Responsibilities
  • Dispense meds
  • First aid for minor injuries
  • Ensure health and safety of campers and staff
  • Daily sick call
  • Weekly health checks
  • Communicating specific camper health needs (allergies, special diets) to staff
  • Medical record keeping
  • Act as a liaison with local doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies
  • Communicate with camp directors about camper health issues
  • Accompany sick/injured campers or staff to the hospital or to medical appointments
  • Be a "summer mom" to our campers
  • Flexible work schedules and rotations in case of an emergency
  • Participate in camp activities and events
Qualifications and Requirements
  • RN or LPN degree (or nursing student-to assist in Health Center)
  • Flexible-- able to adapt to different environments and schedules
  • Confidence in nursing skills
  • Responsible, hard-working
  • Good bedside manner, friendly and personable
  • Strong assessment abilities
  • Prior experience with children (does not have to be in a medical capacity)
  • Desire and ability to be a team player
  • Enjoy an active lifestyle
  • Willing to obtain appropriate state licensure (camp will reimburse)
  • ER and/or pediatric unit experience preferred, but not required
  • New nursing graduates and nurses with families are welcome
Work Schedule
Our Health Center is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We create a schedule of shifts that fits the need of camp.
