Every Day is Women’s Day at Camp Wicosuta!

Did you know that March 8th is International Women’s Day?  Every day is Women’s Day at Camp Wicosuta!

People often ask us about the value of an all girls’ camp.  Some go so far as to express their concern about having so many girls together because “you know how girls can be….”  The implication, of course, is negative and assumes the worst.  The nature of this question is THE reason that an all girls’ experience is critically important!

At Wico, we talk about building our 3 Cs: Confidence, Competence and Community.  Additionally, we want each girl to leave camp feeling proud of being a girl.  Accomplishing this means breaking down stereotypes of women and girls by:

  • Labeling behaviors (both positive and negative), rather than people,
  • Empowering each girl to be the best version of herself, and
  • Creating a community where there are lots of ways to be a girl (including diversity of look, choices, etc.).

Our counselors are just as passionate about this as we are.  They hold themselves up as positive role models and understand that they are shaping the lives of their campers– the women of the future.  Older campers carry this torch, as well.  Through their leadership roles at camp, they model sisterhood, healthy friendships and a true love for each other and the community.

There are few truly girl-centric communities—Wicosuta is one of them.  We know that girls leave camp feeling empowered and hope they share it with the world, so that future generations never have to answer the question, “Why all girls?”

Here is a great resource for girls and their parents including book and movie recommendations for all ages.  Take a look.  I hope that you enjoy it!  https://www.amightygirl.com/
